Caño Negro

Wildlife Refuge

On this tour, you will take a boat on the Frio River and explore the wetlands of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, located a few kilometers south of the border with Nicaragua

This isolated refuge has an incredible diversity of wildlife. Bring your binoculars and see how many of the 350 species of birds found in the area can be detected. These species include storks, pink spoonbills, herons, roe deer and cormorants.

Your guide will explain how these animals fit into the wetland ecosystem. In the shallow waters you can see alligators and turtles. Monkeys and sloths sometimes gather in the trees near the banks of the river. There is a lizard in this area called the lizard of Jesus Christ, known for its ability to walk on water.

During this 9-hour tour, your guide will provide you with bottled water and snacks. Finally, take a break and participate in a typical Costa Rican lunch
